We want to make sure that your contract's the right fit for you, especially if your circumstances or driving habits change.

Making changes to your contract

When you take out your lease, you agree to a contract length and a mileage allowance. If either of these don't meet your needs, you can ask to change them.

You can get a quote first to help decide if changing your contract is the right thing for you. Just go to Manage My Vehicle.

Change your mileage

Are you driving more mileage than agreed?

Changing your contract could help you avoid excess mileage charges.

If you're driving fewer miles, your costs might be lower if you change your contract.

You can get a quote to see how a mileage change will affect your monthly payments on Manage My Vehicle.

Change the length of your contract

You've got a few options:

  1. Ask us to extend your lease (formal extension). You can extend your contract in Manage My Vehicle.
  2. Reduce the length of your lease
  3. Do nothing at the end of your lease (informal extension). Informal extension is only meant to be a short-term option.

Mileage

Excess mileage charges

If you’re over your agreed allowance when you return your vehicle, we'll invoice you for an excess mileage fee.

The amount will be in the 'Key Information' section of your contract. It's shown as pence per mile, including VAT.

If you know you're driving more miles than you originally agreed, you can ask to change your mileage allowance as long as you still have at least three monthly payments left on your current contract. You get a quote in Manage My Vehicle

You can then decide if it's better to change your contracted mileage or pay the excess mileage fee.

We'll need to do a credit check before making any changes to your contract, but we’ll always ask your permission first.

Not driving your contracted mileage?

If you’re driving fewer miles than you're contracted to in your lease, you could reduce your mileage allowance.

We don’t refund you for any unused mileage, so it’s best to make changes to your allowance as soon as you can.

You can get a quote to see how this affects your monthly payments on Manage My Vehicle.

We'll need to do a credit check before making any changes to your contract, but we’ll always ask your permission first.

Extend your contract

You can extend your contract formally or informally.

Formal extension

You can extend your contract up to a maximum of 60 months from the date the vehicle is registered. If you want to keep your vehicle after the 60 months, you’ll automatically switch to an informal extension.

Informal extension

Informal extension can be a good short term option because:

  • It’s flexible so it can be useful if you’re waiting for a new vehicle but don’t have a delivery date
  • You don’t need to apply for a new lease or go through any credit checks again as there’s no formal agreement
  • If you had a maintenance contract, you’ll continue paying the same maintenance rates you did when the vehicle was new.

Informal extension is not supposed to be a long-term option for leasing a vehicle.

This is because you might pay more than the value of the vehicle, and you can't ever own it.

  • Once you're in informal extension, you've got 3 options:

    1. Change your vehicle - you can contact your dealer to see if they have a better option for you, rather than keeping your existing vehicle. Once you've chosen a new vehicle, you'll start a new agreement.
    2. Extend your lease - you can enter a new agreement, where you can change your mileage if you want to. You can only extend your lease if your vehicle is less than 5 years old.
    3. Give the vehicle back - If you’re ready to end your contract and hand your vehicle back. Go to Manage My Vehicle and arrange collection. As soon as the car is back with us, your agreement will end automatically – you don’t need to do anything else.

If you stay in informal extension, we'll write to you again in 6 months.

    • Your monthly payment amount may change
    • Your payment date might also change
    • You can’t change your annual mileage allowance. If you’re using your vehicle more that you’d originally expected, you may need to pay for extra mileage when you return it
    • If you’re driving fewer miles than your allowance, we can’t reduce your monthly payments to reflect this
    • If you're staying in informal extension for a long time,  you may end up paying a lot more than the original cost of the vehicle – and you can’t ever own it
