What types of EVs are right for my fleet?

What the LEXperts say

Choosing the right EVs for your fleet can maximise cost savings and reduce emissions significantly. While plug-in hybrids (PHEV) often offer lower upfront costs, fully electric vehicles (EVs) can deliver greater savings and sustainability over time.

A staggered approach to transition

Our experts have supported numerous fleet transitions and have valuable insights to share. Key considerations include staggering the transition, starting with vehicles that are easiest to electrify, and not attempting to switch the entire fleet at once. This approach helps manage costs, logistics, and employee adaptation more effectively.

The value of battery-only EVs in your fleet

Battery-only EVs (BEVs) are the best option for forward-thinking fleet managers. They can offer long-term savings and sustainability, with significantly reduced fuel and maintenance costs. This is confirmed by a whole of life cost analysis – that is, a consideration of fuel, maintenance, national insurance contributions, and more. Notably, using this metric, one corporate fleet made average yearly savings of over £90,000 by switching to EVs. Read E.ON case study (PDF, 290KB)

BEVs produce zero tailpipe emissions and reduce carbon emissions substantially. They are therefore the best choice for the environmentally conscious. Many boast impressive ranges – with 235 miles being the average on a single charge for new vehicles in 2024.

If your employees regularly drive longer distances, long-range electric vehicles could also be a good choice, with some managing up to 400 miles or more on one charge. They tend to be pricier than lower-range EVs but they bring strong sustainability and efficiency credentials.

The value of hybrids in your fleet

For those worried about range or charging anxiety, a plug-in hybrid may be an ultra-low emissions alternative. PHEVs are suitable for fleets that may need regular small journeys but occasionally need to undertake very long trips. They can drive in petrol/diesel or electric mode (or both simultaneously). The largest benefit is the ability to charge the on-board battery by a charge point, benefiting from the cost savings of using electricity from the grid.

But, it is crucial that PHEVs are regularly plugged in to maximise the efficiencies of driving in EV mode. Otherwise, they function primarily as a petrol/diesel vehicle with the extra weight of the battery, which can negatively impact fuel efficiency and emissions.

While plug-in hybrids can reduce fuel consumption, they aren’t the most efficient option for achieving zero-emission goals.

Charging infrastructure considerations

When choosing the right EVs for your fleet, it's essential to consider the charging infrastructure. This includes the availability and costs of accessing home, workplace, and public charging solutions. Making sure that your fleet has access to reliable charging points will enhance operational efficiency and driver convenience.

Staff engagement and feedback

Engaging staff and considering their feedback is crucial for a successful transition to EVs. Our experience with E.ON showed that a tailored Green Salary Sacrifice scheme significantly increased employee eligibility, resulting in 78% of employees being eligible to lease an EV. Similarly, the Eric Wright Group's transition plan to an all-electric fleet was supported by comprehensive policy redesign and employee engagement. Notably, 95% of broker EV customers have chosen another EV when renewing their vehicle, highlighting the satisfaction with EVs. Read Eric Wright case study here (PDF, 1.8MB)

Benchmarking data to help with operational efficiencies

Lex Autolease offers comprehensive benchmarking data to help you with identifying cost and operational efficiencies across your fleet. This includes sector comparisons, peer comparisons, and fleet performance metrics. By leveraging this data, you can make informed decisions that enhance safety, compliance, and overall fleet performance.

Understanding your fleet's driving patterns and budget needs will help you choose the optimal solution. In our experience BEVs are an ideal all-round choice for fleets aiming to maximise savings, meet sustainability goals, and support operational efficiency.
